This one has the British Agents Import Mark, the optional low Bb Key Spatula and optional low D#/Eb Trill key; very rare options for a Selmer Paris Sax and not usually available on American Market Selmers. This horn comes in the correct 1930/31 Selmer Tray-Pak Case, with the very rare and correct first year Selmer Paris Tenon Plug that is stamped with the Selmer Paris Logo; you don't see many of these!
Horn sits on a fairly new set of pads and corks, is tight and plays exceptionally well in upper and lower registers. It comes with its original neck, and the body is very nice and straight, with no major dents or dings. Bell brace is nice and original with no re-solders present anywhere on the horn that I may observe. The horn plays great top to bottom, and sounds wonderful. These Cigar Cutters play much better than the New large Bore Models, mainly due to the addition to the "then new" solid Bronze Neck Receiver. They have more presence and resonance and are the Saxes that really put Selmer Paris on the map so-to-speak with professional Sax Players of the era. The new octave mechanism nick named "Cigar Cutter" was a beautiful and elegant mechanism that worked very well.
Unfortunately, Selmer was sued by Beuscher that claimed the design was a patent infringement on their Beuscher Aristocrat Model, even though the octave mechanism in question doesn't look a lot alike. None the less, Selmer was forced to change the design later in their model run and this accounts in part, why Selmer Cigar Cutter Tenor Saxes were never offered in the American Market, only in Europe. This Selmer Paris Cigar Cutter was well loved and played. It has some wear on the key touches and pearls, but it is not bad. The horn is tight overall with little slack or play in the key work. All the pearl key touches are in very good condition with only the lower F key touche showing wear. The lower bow on the horn is immaculate, with no signs of any dents or repairs that I may observe. The neck tenon fits nice and snug, and is tight and seals very well. The horn is a pleasure to play with good intonation, tone and response. If you are playing any vintage Jazz this is the horn to have. It plays differently from a Balanced or Super Balanced Action Model, with a sweeter, more resonate timbre. The term or phrase, "The Selmer Sound" really originated with this model of Sax. Horn comes with a 1933 Selmer "Balanced Tone" a. "BT" Clarinet with matching joints and serial numbers. It plays very well and is a very desirable and valuable horn as well.
The two paired together is a great combination and find. If you don't want the BT Clarinet I can split the pair and sell individually.
