1938 Vintage Selmer Balanced Action Alto Sax - New Pads! This is a freshly restored, 1938 vintage Selmer Paris Balanced Action alto sax, serial number 26750.This horn was just overhauled in the Saxquest repair shop by Josh Creekmore, and is playing up a storm! This alto was an old relacquer and had been sitting for a number of years by the time we received it. As such, we decided to do this one right. We had it re-engraved in the original style, and as you can see in the photos, the work came out great. The engraving is a bit brighter right now and really stands out, though that will tarnish and darken with time. With that done, Josh performed a full overhaul on it, using premium firm leather pads and oversized, slightly domed seamless metal resonators. All material has been replaced, and the horn has been precisely regulated. It feels like butter under your hands, with a truly effortless, smooth action. Looking over the horn very carefully, it just doesn't look like this alto was ever played really hard. There are no signs of any past trauma or dent work, and everything is solid on the alto from top to bottom. The original neck has never been pulled down or dented. With the fresh set of pads and material, playing it feels like stepping back in time.
This is a fine playing horn. It plays with a free, open feel, slightly spread in sound, while keeping a warm core sound, as you'd expect and want in a Selmer Paris. Its response is lightning quick, and the horn speaks well from low Bb up into the palm keys and beyond. A really fun alto for serious players who love horns from this era.
