Meyer New York Medium Chamber 5 tip measures. I have owned more than a dozen NY Meyer alto pieces and played many more in the course of 40 years of performing, this original example is the best I have ever owned or played. The original 5s I owned ranged in tip size from. 074 and they differed in tone, some were very bright and focused, some spread.
This example has the same tip opening as the NYUSA Meyer Phil Woods played, which measured. 073, these have a slightly bigger voice. Check out Phil Woods performance on his album Showboat for a fine recorded example of this kind of NY Meyer voice. I can heartily recommend this piece as an outstanding example of what NY Meyer 5 pieces can offer.
This piece was played for many years by a top. Pro, his slight teeth marks were removed by the skillful tech Mojo, he cleaned up the beak by adding a minute amount of material rather than buffing the beak and risk affecting the sound. This is a very minor cosmetic issue which is almost invisible and has no bearing on the spectacular performance of this piece. I always played the piece with a patch so there was no issue anyway. I tried to capture the important details in the photos. The Meyer logo is stamped low at the bottom of the table on these early NYUSA pieces, behold t. He thin tip rail and finishing work on the baffle, they are. This piece is a killer, someone is going to get lucky! The item "Meyer New York 5 Alto Sax Mouthpiece original 1960s example" is in sale since Monday, August 24, 2020.
